What you’re paying for.
Is the open-source version really fully featured?
Yes. The local CLI runs the full MCP server, the viewer renders any graph, and you can ingest snapshots back from the cloud via MCP. Every cloud plan includes those local features by definition.
What are credits and how do they work?
Credits power the AI features: mining a topic into a graph, enriching nodes, chatting against your graphs, and the meeting agent. One credit = one Foundry token unit. Free welcome credits give you 1,000 to try; Intelligence and Enterprise refill monthly.
Can I bring my own API key?
Not on the cloud plans. The credit pool exists so you don’t have to think about token math. If you want raw API control, run Backpack locally and pipe it to whatever model you like.
What stays local versus what goes to the cloud?
Run the OSS server and nothing leaves your drive, period. Choose the cloud and graphs sync to Backpack App so the Curiosity Engine can reason across them. You can snapshot the cloud back down to local any time over MCP. Public graph commons posts are explicitly opt-in per graph.
